Before All The Glory, These Famous People Were First Teachers

During a time when all it takes to be famous is a 30-second video going viral, it is easy to forget that the rise to fame has not always been easy. From actors, musicians, comedians, and even presidents, some big names in the spotlight did not automatically hit big. For some, it all began with a regular job like teaching. You heard this right. Many big names in Hollywood started in front of students in a classroom. Here are some famous people who began their careers as teachers.

1. J.K. Rowling

A great author of our time, it is no surprise J.K. Rowling was once a teacher. Responding to an advert in The Guardian, she taught English as a foreign language in Porto, Portugal, to generate income before her career as a writer took off.

2. Sylvester Stallone

We may know him as the face of the 1960s hardman who graced the box office, but that was not always the case. As an undergraduate studying overseas, Sylvester had to find a way to earn cash while studying in Switzerland; thus, he became a gym teacher. It is good to see his macho skills become of use in his future career.

3. Brian May

Not your ordinary Rockstar, this guitarist worked hard to become a member of one of the most iconic rock bands ever to exist, with two degrees in Physics and Mathematics and a Ph.D. in astrophysics. He put his diploma to use by becoming a teacher in London at Stockwell Manor School.

4. Jesse Williams

Williams was not always known as the handsome doctor from Grey’s Anatomy. Taking after his parents, Jesse became a teacher right after graduating from Temple University. He taught English, American, and African Studies in public school for six years before switching careers and becoming an actor.

5. Sheryl Crow

Believe it or not, through teaching, Sheryl became a household name in the music industry. Sheryl worked as a teacher and wrote jingles and music. While she taught music in Missouri at Kellison Elementary school, she was able to make money while building her music career.
