Washington shared that the change of pronunciation of his name began with his own mother. He revealed that his father was “Den-ZULL” and he was Den-ZULL Jr. But his mother started to call him Den-ZELLE to avoid confusion.

Washington has never made a big deal out of people calling him “Den-ZELLE.” Since the mispronunciation started with his mother, he is probably content with it. When Graham Norton tried to call him with the original pronunciation, Washington urged him to stick with the commonly used one.
